You want a Board Certification Plastic Surgeon

As you do your due diligence searching for the right doctor, keep in mind you want to be sure that the surgeon you select is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).  This lets you know that your doctor has undergone a rigorous board certification process by the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Be sure your physician is a member of American Society of Plastic Surgeons. ASPS is well-respected, and members must maintain a rigorous set of continuing education, advanced training and meet patient safety standards to qualify as members.

Be comfortable with your surgeon’s approach

Good plastic surgery requires the provider to be able to customize his or her treatment to your situational needs. Review the surgeon’s gallery of patient cases and before and after photos to see a variety of excellent results. Ask for additional pictures, case studies or where you can go to read unbiased patient testimonials.

Check out the medical facility

An accredited and accommodating facility is important. Many procedures can happen outside of a hospital environment. You want to be sure the facility your procedure will take place in is held to the highest standards of safety, quality and patient care.

In order to find out if a facility is accredited by a credible organization, you should look for at least one of the following certifications:

  • State licensure
  • Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
  • American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAASF)
  • Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care
  • Title XVIII Medicare participation

Trust your doctor

You may interview more than one surgeon to find the right connect. You want to feel comfortable enough to trust without question. Having good communication with your surgeon and surgical staff can take a good plastic surgery experience and make it a great one. Have open honest and important discussions about aesthetic goals, lifestyle, overall health and any questions or concerns that you might have with your surgeon for best results.

An honest opinion goes a long way

The best surgeon will give you honest, straightforward guidance on the best approach to your situation and the realistic results you can expect. Recovery time can vary and your surgeon can give you the best explanation and help you maintain expectations for your results.
