Following weight reduction surgery or substantial weight loss, the skin and tissues often lack elasticity and cannot conform to the reduced body size. This results in the skin that has been stretched by excess fat to become unsupported, creating a loose, sagging appearance. The stretched skin in the abdominal area often extends into the lower back area, resulting in an unattractive overhang. The skin around the buttocks, groin and thigh areas can also sag and cause hanging pockets.
Surgical body contouring following major weight loss can improve the shape and tone of your underlying tissues by removing the excess skin and fat. The surgery results in creating smoother contours for an improved overall body appearance. In essence, body contouring surgery is the final phase of your weight loss journey and can help you achieve the look you have always wanted.
Body Contouring Operation & Recovery
General anesthesia is administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Incisions are made to remove the excess skin and fat. Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Hirschfeld strategically places incisions in locations where they can be hidden by most clothing. Depending on the extent of work required, sometimes body contouring surgery needs to be done in phases.
After the surgery, dressing or bandages will be applied to the incisions. Bruising and swelling after surgery is normal, and usually reaches its peak at around the three week mark.
Dr. Hirschfeld will provide you with specific details on what to expect during the recovery period and instructions for post operative care.
